Museum Day, 2018

Museum Day, May 26, 2018 at the Rocky Museum

On May 26, 2018, we celebrated Museum Day here at the Rocky Museum. The weather was warm and the sun was shining on an exciting and eventful day. We had several fun demonstrations throughout the day from Lawrence with his rope-maker, Sarah with her weaving, and our two volunteer blacksmiths; Henrietta and Jason. They all helped to make Museum Day not only fun but educational. Kids had plenty of fun with the activities set up outside, including a ring toss, bean bag toss, horseshoes, and a game from the 1800's called the Game of Graces. This game involves two dowels and a small hoop that you flick back and forth between two people. Inside there was more planned for the kids with Do-It-Yourself mini weaving kits, button spinners, thaumatropes, and a photo booth set up to look like a jail cell straight out of an old western movie. Our final fun event for the general public was a door prize. It was won by Maddox and Alyssa! In the afternoon we celebrated the achievement of one of our fellow dedicated historians, Pat McDonald. He was awarded the Governor General's Medal for Volunteers. A delicious and enjoyable strawberry tea was held in the schoolhouse to commend his achievements with speeches, congratulatory words, and well wishes from Clearwater County Councilor Theresa Laing, Clair Shane from the Alberta Museums Association, former Rocky Mountain House mayor Fred Nash, and Rocky Museum's Jean-Marie Mason who read an e-mail from the National Historic Site. Good food and great conversation were shared between friends and family. It was safe to say the day was a huge success and we look forward to next year's Museum Day!
